Independent review of Defra’s regulatory landscape
A recurring theme in our blogs the urgent need for environmental regulations to be applied in a clearer and more streamlined way. This will enable businesses, local authorities, and communities to act swiftly and effectively to protect resources, the environment and address climate change.
So, we’re pleased that a new report ‘Delivering economic growth and nature recovery: an independent review of Defra’s regulatory landscape’ has called for greater regulatory flexibility. The recommendations include the acceleration of sensible, risk-based decisions to support net-zero and circular economy priorities. Examples the report gives include the development of low carbon industrial infrastructure and for ensuring remediated soil is not unnecessarily categorised as waste.
Defra commissioned this internal review, led by economist Dan Corry, to assess whether its regulatory framework effectively supports economic growth while protecting the environment. The report concludes, that “if we truly want to protect nature and drive growth, we must deliver these changes to provide a more coherent, consistent and practical system.”
We hope these recommendations are acted upon swiftly – for the sake of our planet and for future generations! You can read the recommendations here:
